2008 Wedding Trends - Environmentally Friendly

By Bobette Kyle-Wagner | February 20, 2008

Natural WeddingsThe movement toward a more natural and planet-friendly lifestyle is creating positive trends within most industries, and wedding trends are no different. Vendors quoted in last Sunday’s St. Louis Post Dispatch mentioned noticing several “green” wedding trends for 2008. Including:

- Green bouquets for a green wedding. Carolyn Burke has noticed more brides choosing green as their wedding color — and featuring green flowers and foliage in the bouquets — to communicate their support of a healthier earth. You could also go natural by decorating with freeze dried or fresh rose petals (instead of silk).

- Another environmentally-friendly trend is using potted seedlings instead of cut flowers in centerpieces. Guests can later plant them in yards or wooded areas.

- Josie Littepage has seen the trend emerge through wedding favors. She has seen favors made from recycled items (such as bottle caps) or seed-ingrained, recycled paper. For ideas, take a look at these eco-friendly wedding favors.

Other environmentally-friendly trends we’ve seen:

- Print invitations and other mailings on recycled paper (Such as theseĀ nature-Inspired invitations, pringed on hand-made, recycled paper. Part of a green sale running through 2/29/2008). Also, use a wedding website to communicate event details, saving paper. (And trees!)

- Request that guests, in lieu of wedding gifts, donate to your favorite environmental cause.

- Think organic and locally-grown foods. Speak with your caterer about serving dishes made with local foods, reducing the pollution-generating fuel needed to transport the foods. Also, organic foods reduce your and your guests’ exposure to pesticides used on conventionally grown produce.
