2008 Wedding Trends — Tossing, Waving, Releasing
By Bobette Kyle-Wagner | February 24, 2008
Traditionally, rice or bird seed were thrown as the newly wedded couple exits the church. The trend, according to Josie Littlepage, is toward more colorful wedding tosses. She has seen eucalyptus and lavender petals thrown, and even seen guests shake — not throw — colorful streamers. Other suggestions we’ve seen:
- Set off biodegradable party poppers
- throw air-popped popcorn
- ring tiny bells
- shake hand fulls of colorful ribbons
- throw bath confetti
- throw dried herbs (an old Victorian tradition)
- blow bubbles
- throw sunflower seeds (sounds kind of painful to me)
Releases can be popular as well (although I haven’t seen anyone designate releases as a trend). Some options:
- helium-filled balloons, color-coordinated with the wedding
- butterflies
- doves
