Tiara HistoryLike veils, tiaras have gone in and out of favor throughout history. Unlike the veil, however, they were primarily symbols of power or riches rather than everyday fashion. In ancient Egypt, they adorned statues of gods and priests. Members of the French court displayed elegant tiaras heavily laced with jewels in the early 1800's. Tiaras also began making appearances at weddings during this time and became increasingly popular across Europe throughout the 19th century. By the early 1900's, they were a widespread symbol of royalty and wealth. As jewelers began to craft a wider variety, including more affordable pieces, tiaras became more popular as wedding wear. Today, brides wear tiaras for a touch of elegance, removing the veil at her reception to showcase the design. |
