Back jewelry

If your gown is low cut in the back, or altogether backless, you may want to dress it up with back jewelry. Your back, after all, will be to your guests during most of the ceremony.

  • An opera-length necklace or strands of pearls can be draped down your back for a formal look.
  • Back-drape necklaces, with varying length chains or other back drapes can be stunning.
  • A bridal jewelry lariat, a necklace with an ornamental piece hanging down the back, will add interest to a bare back. Some long front-lariat designs can be worn backwards to add sparkle down the back.
  • Bridal chokers often come with a long back drop or can be custom-made to include one.
  • Wear this 14k Gold Pullover Hanging Crucifix Necklace down the back, showing your faith to guests.

Necklace or pearls

Keep in mind that the intricacy of the necklace should work with your dress. Enhance the look of a simple, unadorned gown with a bold necklace, but opt for a delicate necklace or pearls with an elaborate gown. You can also forego the necklace to show off your gown's neckline.

Each neckline type goes well with different necklace lengths. You will rarely go wrong with the versatile 14 to 16 inch choker-length bridal necklace, but other lengths do not pair as well with all necklines. Try different options, but bear in mind that you want to leave a gap between the necklace and the neckline of the dress. On the other hand, if your gown is simple, it is fine to wear a strand of pearls or necklace that hangs below the neckline.

Here are some other suggestions for selecting a necklace:

  • A high neckline may not need a necklace. If you choose to wear one, a 12 to 13 inch collar, 14 to 16 inch choker, or 17 to 19 inch princess length looks best.
  • A low, off-the-shoulder, or plunging neckline that exposes a lot of skin looks well with many lengths, from a collar to princess length. The bolder bride may prefer a 40 inch rope-length strand of pearls.
  • V-neck gowns are most balanced with a collar-type necklace.

Wrist wear

A general rule of thumb for bridal wrist jewelry is to go bare, or choose a very delicate bracelet as an accent piece that complements the rest of your jewelry ensemble. An exception is if you are wearing a princess-style tulle gown or an otherwise simple, strapless dress. Consider pairing these gowns with a crystal, cubic zirconium, or diamond-encrusted tennis or cuff bracelet. Experiment to assure a balanced look that reflects your personality and does not detract from the overall tone you are setting for your wedding day. All but the tiniest watches are too clunky for bridal wear, so skip it altogether.
