Alexandrite is a rare gemstone that changes color depending on
the light (from green in daylight to red in candlelight or typical household
lighting, for example). Because of its rarity, the naturally-occuring stone is
very expensive, up to $100,000 per carat by some reports. For this reason, most
alexandrite rings are made from simulated or synthetic alexandrite grown in a
