Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum (other colors

sapphires). Because of their color and the association with Valentine's Day,
rubies are often linked to passion and romance. They can grow rather large (the largest,
at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, weighs in at 23.1 carats),
