Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum (other colors
are considered
sapphires). Because of their color and the association with Valentine's Day,
rubies are often linked to passion and romance. They can grow rather large (the largest,
at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, weighs in at 23.1 carats),
making rings showcasing the gemstone attractive gifts. While the ruby in your ring will be considerably
