Lovely Wedding Hands

Don’t underestimate to allure of beautiful hands. You may not be a hand model, but your fingers can look longer and slimmer with a little attention to your nails. Here are some tips from the experts on what to do and when to do it.

  • The safest color you can choose for your wedding-day fingernails is no color at all — clear; so, if your polish chips, it won’t be obvious. It’s also a good idea to tuck a bottle of clear polish into your purse for emergency touch-ups or to patch a run in your pantyhose if you need to.

  • Look for polish in classic creams or sheers. Nude hues will make nails look longer. If the sheen seems to have dulled a bit on the day of the wedding, brush on a shiny topcoat that morning.

  • For guaranteed perfect nails, consider having acrylic tips or overlays, which will last you right through your honeymoon. If they’re done by a professional, they rarely chip or break. If you decide later you don’t like them or just don’t want the bother with the expense of regular fills, you can have them removed by your nail technician.

  • French manicures are beautiful but prone to fading at the tips. If you like the look but don’t want to take a chance, natural, rounded fingernails are a great substitute for great-looking hands at your wedding ceremony. The look is a very sheer covering all over the nail, with just a hint of color. You can also find many iridescent shades to add a little drama.

  • Keep your cuticles in shape with regular cuticle treatments in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Smooth, well-oiled cuticles help grow healthy nails. Push your cuticles back regularly with a specially designed cuticle pusher, but leave cuticle trimming to an experienced nail technician.

Having problems with your nails? Everyone has them on occasion, but where there are problems, there are usually solutions. Here are some of ours.

  • If you are a nail biter, you probably do it as a nervous habit. Start getting regular manicures and seeing how truly gorgeous your nails look as the weeks go by. This has the added benefit of getting you used to wearing polish, so that it feels natural on your wedding day.
  • If using polish doesn't stop your nail-biting habit, rub them with a gel or cream containing britrix or other nasty-tasting substance.
  • If your nails are yellow or discolored and show through your polish, try taking a break from polish. Of course, you’ll have to do it at least six weeks before your wedding, but it will make your nails whiter.
  • If going without polish makes you uncomfortable, try one of a variety of remedies to lighten your nails. Try rubbing the nails with lemon juice or soaking them in a denture cleanser. If your nails are strong, you can lightly buff the discoloration, revealing the lighter nail beneath. For whiter tips, use a nail whitening pencil.
  • If your problem is fragile, brittle, or peeling nails, regular manicures will help bring them back to life. A back-and-forth sawing motion weakens the nail, so remember to always file in one direction.
  • For more drastic nail repair, apply a nail strengthener as a base coat. Reapply as directed and like magic, you will see your nails get stronger.

That’s it. We've covered your wedding-day skin, makeup, hair and hands. Tip to toe, you are a beautiful bride. True, it has taken a bit more work than having your fairy godmother swish her magic wand a few times, but the effect is the same. The good news is all of your efforts won’t fade into nothingness at midnight. Your skin will keep on glowing, your newly toned body will remain svelte, and all the many parts of you will stay lovely long after your special day. (All you will need to add is a little maintenance.) The lessons you’ve learned about being healthy, fit, and beautiful are as permanent as the photograph album that records the wonder and happiness of your wedding day.
